Flooring Area & Box Estimator
Measure each room (or each rectangle of an L-shaped room), choose a waste allowance, and enter the coverage printed on the box. The tool adds the areas and rounds the number of boxes up.
Formula and units
Net area = Σ (length × width)
Area to buy = net area × (1 + waste % ÷ 100)
Boxes = area to buy ÷ coverage per box, rounded up to a whole box
- Consistent measurement units: use feet (ft) for square foot areas or metres (m) for square metre areas. Carton coverage must match the selected unit system.
- Exact conversion factor: 1 ft = 0.3048 m exactly, so 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m² (and 1 m² ≈ 10.7639 ft²). The calculator provides instant cross-unit conversions for international ordering.
- Ceiling rounding rule: retailers and distributors sell flooring only in whole cartons. The calculator applies mathematical ceiling rounding (
ceil(area ÷ coverage)) to ensure you never run short on site.

How to calculate flooring quantity and box counts step by step
Accurately estimate your flooring materials in four straightforward steps:
- Select measurement units. Choose feet (ft) for areas in ft² or metres (m) for areas in m².
- Measure room dimensions. Measure the length and width of each rectangular space. For L-shaped rooms, click "+ Add area" to break the space into non-overlapping rectangles.
- Apply a waste allowance percentage. Enter a waste allowance (standard 5% to 10% for straight layouts, or 15% to 20% for diagonal/herringbone patterns) to cover cutting offcuts and board stagger.
- Enter carton coverage and calculate. Input the coverage per box stated on your flooring package. The tool calculates total square footage to buy and rounds up to full cartons.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate how many boxes of flooring I need?
Multiply the room length by width to obtain net floor area, add a waste allowance percentage (typically 10%), then divide this total purchase area by the coverage per box listed on the manufacturer's packaging and round up to the nearest whole box.
How much extra flooring should I order for waste?
A standard waste allowance is 5% to 10% for simple rectangular rooms with straight plank runs. Complex rooms with angled walls, closets, alcoves, or intricate patterns such as herringbone or diagonal layouts typically require 15% to 20% waste allowance.
How do I measure an L-shaped room for flooring?
Divide the L-shape into two separate non-overlapping rectangles, measure the length and width of each section, and sum the two areas together. You can add each rectangle as a separate area in this calculator using the "+ Add area" button.
Does the flooring calculator include underlayment, adhesives, or trim?
No. This tool computes net floor surface area, waste-adjusted purchase area, and carton quantities. Additional installation accessories such as underlayment rolls, transition mouldings, baseboards, and adhesives must be calculated separately.
What length and area units are supported?
The calculator supports both imperial units (feet and square feet) and metric units (metres and square metres). It also automatically displays converted units (1 ft² = 0.092903 m²) for convenient material ordering.
Limits
- Each area is a rectangle. Split L-shaped or irregular rooms into rectangles; subtract fixed cabinets or islands by leaving them out of your rectangles.
- The waste allowance is your own input. The right figure depends on the product, the pattern (for example diagonal or herringbone layouts) and the room shape.
- This tool does not include underlayment, trims, adhesives or prices, and it does not assess subfloor condition.
